Thanksgiving Hacks That May Help You Save Money

Yes, Thanksgiving is one of the most indulgent holidays we celebrate each year. Unfortunately, our finances suffer from extravagant meals, events, and gift-giving during this time of year, but we’ve come up with some awesome tips to save your wallet and save you the stress! If you’re a Thanksgiving host this year:

  1. Know what your company likes, and don’t add unnecessary extras to the menu! Why make cranberry sauce when no one likes it? Instead, focus on items that you know your guests will enjoy...no one said that your meal has to be completely traditional! Maybe your kids enjoy peanut butter chocolate pie instead of pumpkin -- fine! Go with what’s going to get eaten!

  2. Utilize nature’s calendar. Grab the veggies that are in-season...they’re more likely to be cheaper, and fresher! Lucky for you, butternut squash so happens to be in season this time of year. Find some delicious and easy recipes that use the fresh veggies that you have available to you in your area!

  3. Use smaller plates! No doubt that we all wake up on Thanksgiving with a sparkle in our eyes, knowing we’ll be stuffing our plates with the yummiest foods in a matter of hours! But our eyes are, more often than not, much bigger than our stomachs. By offering your guests smaller plates, they take less food their first time around but still get full! Less food wasted = more leftovers!

  4. Search the internet for some cheap, easy recipes! Maybe you’ve been making your casseroles more expensively than you thought! The internet offers such a variety when it comes to cheap recipes and new ideas...use it to your advantage!

Lastly, remember that Thanksgiving isn’t just about the food. It’s about enjoying the company of friends and family, and truly reflecting on our blessings within the past year. Even though 2020 was a tough year in our world, there are still things to be grateful for.

We hope these tips help you enjoy the holiday! If you’re still looking to save or need financial advice, that’s what we’re here for at the NRFCU! Be sure to stop by or give us a call. We’re here for you #WhenLifeHappens.
